A "Capitol" Idea - March 27th 2009

| Young citizens at Fred M. Lynn Middle School had an opportunity to visit the hallowed halls of the nation’s capitol building Friday March 27th 2009. Civic-minded Lynntonians from grades six, seven, and eight were treated to a guided tour sponsored by Congressman Connolly’s office. Their tour began with a brief film highlighting the establishment of a new form of government for our nation, as well as the vital role Congress plays in our everyday lives. In smaller groups, they met their guides, and they were welcomed into the rotunda. Cameras clicked as students busily took in the magnificence of the dome, and the beauty of the art that graces the national rotunda. Fred Lynn students were a credit to their school as they answered questions posed by their guide, often asking further insightful questions about the architecture, the art, and the history that is in the great building. Students were led through the wing of the Capitol which accommodates the House of Representatives, where they were able to view the National Statuary Hall, one of the most historic chambers in the Capitol. One student remarked, "I had no idea that the inside of the building was so beautiful. I almost feel like I am in a museum, and I want to bring my family back here." Ms. Dora Tetteyfio, teacher on administrative assignment, said that comments like that are what field trips to the Capitol are all about, and she added that next year she would like to find a way for all Fred Lynn students to be able to attend this illuminating field trip, and to know that the Capitol building belongs to the people. Mrs. J. Harrison Coleman, principal and Virginia Turnaround Specialist, had this to say, "The very best education we can offer our students is the opportunity to engage in real life experiences." ![]() ![]() ![]() |
