BELIEFS & PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
 
The primary goal of the Fred M. Lynn Middle School Counseling Department is to assist students in becoming lifelong learners and achieving to their fullest potential so they can become productive members of a diverse society. 
 
It is the belief of the counselors at Fred Lynn Middle School that:
 
  • Our students have unlimited potential and need to be given a supportive and safe environment to learn to resolve challenges and become academically proficient.
  • Counseling services should be available for all students.
  • Proactive and developmentally appropriate counseling programs should be planned, implemented, and evaluated that support the school, county, and American School Counseling Association goals.
  • The counseling department will work with all stakeholders (parents, teachers, administrators, community members) to provide for the academic, career, and social support of all students.
 
MISSION STATEMENT
 
The mission of the Fred M. Lynn Middle School Counseling Department aligns with the school mission to prepare our students to “positively confront and resolve challenges with social presence and academic proficiency.” The Fred M. Lynn School Counseling Department is dedicated to working with all stakeholders to meet the academic, career, and personal/social needs of all students. The professional school counseling staff will create a safe and supportive counseling environment and will provide a data driven, developmentally appropriate program to help all students meet their fullest potential.

Important information for 8th grade students:

Mrs. Stone has visited all 8th grade classrooms and given the following information to students:

Prince William County Public Schools offers specialty programs at various high schools.  Students need to apply to and be accepted into each of the following programs, if they are interested.  Specialty bus transportation is available to students to go to a high school that is not their base school.  Please contact Mrs. Stone if you have further questions. 

HIGH SCHOOL SPECIALTY PROGRAM ORIENTATION
 
Center for Fine and Performing Arts: (Woodbridge Senior High School) Trains young artists for professions in fine and performing arts. Includes opportunities in creative writing, visual arts, instrumental and vocal music, theater, dance, and television production. Deadline: Friday, January 15, 2010.
 
The University of Cambridge Program(Potomac High School) International pre-university curriculum that focuses on an investigative approach to learning, project work, and individual research. Students can qualify for an Advanced International Certification of Education diploma.
Deadline: Tuesday, February 16, 2010
 
The BiotechnologyCenter: (Osbourn Park High School) Enriched and challenging science curriculum with strong emphasis on technology, environmental, and biological sciences.
Deadline: Tuesday, February 16, 2010
 
Center for International Studies and Languages(Hylton High School) Emphasizes global awareness/issues respective to cultures and languages, information and communication, and political systems. Foreign language is required. Deadline: Tuesday, February 16, 2010
 
International Baccalaureate Programme(Gar-Field High School) Rigorous four-year academic program authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization of Geneva, Switzerland. Classes begin in freshman year. Students are eligible to receive an IB diploma.

Center for Information Technology(Forest Park High School) Programs including graphics and multimedia, hardware and networking, and math and computer programming. Deadline: Tuesday, February 16, 2010
 
Center for Environmental and Natural Science(Freedom High School) Laboratory and field investigation components. Integrates environment and other educational disciplines. Deadline: Tuesday, February 16, 2010

ALL students interested in specialty programs MUST complete and submit applications by the deadline. Applications are also required for students residing within the high school boundary.
If a transfer student withdraws or is dismissed from a specialty program, the student must return to his/her school base.   Students accepted by specialty programs will be notified in the spring and will then complete a schedule for the program they are accepted into.
